About Kurt | perspective and background
Connecting people is a lifelong passion of mine. A public interest attorney by day and professional wedding officiant on the side, I bring to this work a broad background as a former Jesuit priest who served as an educator, spiritual guide, and hospital and prison chaplain. I have been privileged to marry diverse couples across the NYC metro area, and from Boston to Philly to Northern California, and from Medellín Colombia to Southern France. You can read reviews of my work with couples I’ve married here.
Married myself, and with personal and professional ties that span distances, cultures, and outlooks, I bring to planning and officiating at custom wedding ceremonies a commitment to meeting each couple “where they are.” Whether you want a simple elopement, a tasteful customized secular ceremony, or a signature event embracing personally meaningful cultural, spiritual, or religious traditions, I work with you to craft a ceremony that reflects you as individuals and celebrates all you hope to be as a married couple.
Harborlight Weddings | what inspired the name?
I chose Harborlight when I founded my independent wedding officiant service in August 2018 to reflect my own wedding story, and what I believe weddings are about - beauty, joy, and fun!
Leading up to our July 2017 wedding, my now-husband and I considered several venues before reaching what turned out to be one of our best planning decisions: we got married on a boat! Our #BOATWEDDING! from Manhattan's Chelsea Piers to a glistening New York Harbor, around the Statue of Liberty, and beneath the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges was the most joyous day of my life, filled with bright midsummer light. So when it came time to name this enterprise, Harborlight fit just right.
I also believe the Harborlight name speaks to what the best weddings should be. Harbors are gathering places brought alive by celebration, companionship, good food and lively music. Harbors also reflect dynamic sunrise-to-sunset light that helps us connect to all that is good, true and beautiful in life - which, at the end of the day, is what a good wedding should do! So whether you choose a setting by land or by sea, indoors or outdoors, funky or traditional or somewhere in between, the good and the true and the beautiful are what I'm committed to helping you experience for your custom wedding ceremony.
